STEPHANIE.

ROCHET

Actress & Director

Stephanie Rochet-Cuevas’ brilliance as performer is unequivocal, presenting a “star is born” moment on the Sydney stage, having recently arrived from Chile, via Newcastle.
She is formidable, a force to be reckoned with, and a personality one sincerely hopes to see grace our theatres again soon, and often.

ABOUT

ME!

Stephanie Rochet is an international actress and director originally from Chile. Arriving in Australia in 2016, she began to explore the use of technology and livestreaming in theatre. These techniques have been applied in all of her works, bringing the audience a unique and relevant theatre experience.

She considers herself an emerging artist  who is eager to share her thoughts, artistic views, politics, and sense of self while also contributing to the diversity of this country by sharing her culture. That’s why all her theatre projects deal with topics such as love, pain, politics, suicide, illness and her most recent piece that she hopes to develop is related to maternity.

She has also been CONDA nominated for 'The Shake-Up' (2019) a co-production with Branch Nebula and Tantrum Youth Arts. Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 CONDA Awards for her role in the play 'HOME' directed by Janie Gibson. And for Best Ensemble work for 'I Hope Is Not Raining In London' from Bearfoot Theatre in 2022.

"I always want to bring to the audience a connection with my roots, talking about topics I am passionate about as well as keeping my Spanish alive".

My original projects

‘The Plastic Beach’

Awarded Best New Production at the 2019 Newcastle Fringe Festival. In this piece I directed a plastic world, on an island, in which the characters were trapped in a reality TV show. Only to just realise that one of their co-habitants has died from suicide due to the high intensity of the unrealistic life that they had to endure whilst in the island.

'In the right place at the right time'

A collaborative artistic/performatic exhibition with Nat Randall and Tantrum.  In this piece, I sang for 33 minutes (non stop) whilst 37 weeks pregnant and very ill due to a severe form of nausea during pregnancy called 'hyperemesis gravidarum'. For me it was a real challenge as I could barely stand for long periods of time, but this was a great example of how women suffer in silence and continue to endure what sometimes seems unendurable: violence, threats, pregnancy, abortion, miscarriage, death by domestic violence and unfortunately much more.

‘AMOR’

Was awarded Best Newcastle NEW Production at the 2018 Newcastle Fringe Festival.

In this piece I performed with Francisco Silva, actor from Chile , via Facetime. It was a love story of a young couple, trying to make their long distance relationship work only via technology.  This project was created alongside the company of my creative partner from Chile Cote Durán, who is also a passionate and creatively-minded arts management.
